Biography

Michael Creber

Michael Creber is one of the West Coast’s most sought-after musicians, both onstage and in the recording studio. He pursues a wide-ranging career as a keyboardist, composer and producer, embracing many areas of popular music including jazz, Latin, R&B, rock, pop, musical theatre, country and folk.

After recording and touring internationally with the Irish Rovers from 1981 to 1986 (including 36 episodes of Global TV’s Party With the Rovers), Michael went on to become one of k.d. lang's “Reclines.” During the next four years he toured extensively and appeared with k.d. on the Johnny Carson Show (see photo at right), Arsenio Hall, Saturday Night Live, the Grammy Awards, Vicki Gabereau, Super Dave, The Smothers Brothers and Austin City Limits. Michael’s outstanding piano work from this period, heard on k.d.’s 1989 album Absolute Torch and Twang, was dubbed by one L.A. reviewer as “a cross between Floyd Cramer and Thelonius Monk.”

From 1992 to 1995 Michael toured, recorded and produced with world-renowned family entertainer Raffi. Highlights included a performance for US President Bill Clinton's first inauguration, a week of sold-out concerts at
the Gershwin Theater in New York City
(produced by Phil Ramone and released as a video entitled Raffi On Broadway) and a special performance at a Washington luncheon for Mikhail Gorbachev. Michael co-produced and co-wrote Raffi's 1994 CD Bananaphone (which won a Juno Award and was nominated for a Grammy), as well as his 1995 recording, Raffi Radio. He also co-produced Raffi’s most recent album Let’s Play.

Michael has also performed and recorded with many other great Canadian and international artists including: The Rankin Sisters, David Foster, Shirley Bassey, Powder Blues, John Sebastian, Charo, Cyndi Lauper, B.J. Thomas, Roger Miller, Charlotte Diamond, Roy Forbes, Shari Ulrich, Phil Nimmons, Jim Byrnes, Dee Daniels, Kate Hammett-Vaughn, June Katz, Christine Duncan, Connie Kaldor, Norman Foote, Valdy and Nancy White. He is a regular on the Vancouver jazz scene in his own Michael Creber Trio and also as pianist for Fantazea.

During the last few years, Michael has kept busy writing scores for film and radio, producing CDs for various artists, doing session work as a keyboardist, teaching and keeping up a full performance schedule. He has toured with CBC Radio favourites Nancy White and Double Exposure. He also played piano and accordion for the Rankin Sisters’ CD Do You Hear...Christmas with Heather, Cookie and Raylene Rankin, and appeared on their 1998 CBC TV special, Christmas Cabaret. In December of ’99 and 2002 he toured with the Rankin Sisters, performing Christmas concerts with a band and symphony orchestras across Canada. Most recently Michael toured Ontario and Eastern Canada with Lee Aaron.

Michael’s credits as musical director include You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown, Jacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living In Paris and Tapestry: the Music of Carole King, a hit revue at Vancouver’s Arts Club Theatre. In addition he has played keyboards in the orchestra for productions of Miss Saigon and Tommy. In 2001 and 2002 he was the musical director and pianist for the gala fundraiser Divas for Life, which featured many of Vancouver’s finest jazz musicians. With his wife Monique, he co-produces, directs and performs in The Magic of Christmas, an annual benefit concert that among many guest artists has featured The Nylons, Susan Aglukark, The Rankin Sisters, Norman Foote and musical theatre star Michael Burgess along with a 10-piece band and 450 children singing backups. In its nine-year production history the concert has raised over $30,000 for charity.

Michael has three albums of original music to his credit: two solo piano collections, Brand New Smile and Dancers of the Spheres, and a CD by the Michael Creber Trio entitled Smooth Sailing. Michael and his music have been featured several times on CBC Radio’s nationally broadcast JazzBeat, and on Vancouver’s Hot Air.

Biography

Credits
(Performances, recordings, production etc.)

Biography:

Monique Tougas Creber enjoys a multi-faceted career as a vocalist, keyboard player, songwriter, arranger and music educator. A natural performer, she started young on live radio shows and had appeared on two record albums by the time she was 13. She began her professional music career as a teenager in Winnipeg, teaching piano/keyboard/organ and performing in cover bands and lounge acts. Soon her credits had expanded to include a wide variety of concerts, festivals, television appearances, private functions, jingles and musicals, as well as singing the anthems for the former NHL Winnipeg Jets games. In 1992, she directed and performed with a keyboard quartet that represented Canada in the Technics World Music Festival at Wembley Centre in London, England. To date, in a career that spans pop, musical theatre, country and jazz, Monique has now been singing professionally for over 20 years in several languages including English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

Monique

In 1991, Monique wrote, recorded and released her first single, “The Magic Of Christmas,” which continues to get airplay during the holiday season. The year 2000 marked the release of her first solo CD, All For You, which has received national airplay and was also featured on CBC Radio’s Coastal Grooves.

A teacher for the past 25 years, Monique has taught vocal performance and keyboard instruments to hundreds of students from age three to adult. She has also been very active as a businesswoman and education consultant. She has assisted more than 50 music schools from coast to coast in training teachers, setting up systems, administering exams, adjudicating festivals and developing curriculum. She has also trained directors from music schools as far away as Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K., and helped in the development of the Technics keyboard music programs used in many countries around the world. While still living in Winnipeg, Monique owned and managed Music Place, a successful 500-student school and music store. In 1993, she sold the business and moved to Vancouver.

Once on the West Coast, Monique continued her busy performing and teaching career, starting a music school in Horseshoe Bay and on Bowen Island, and singing in various ensembles including a band called Brazileiro. The group recorded an album of jazz standards and originals and has performed in and around Vancouver, including two seasons at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Monique also performs with her own vocal quartet Howe Sounds, and has worked on a variety of studio projects, including recording guide vocals for the Calgary Stampede Grandstand Show for the past few years.

In 1994, Monique launched “The Magic of Christmas” concert series – a popular annual charity event that she continues to produce and perform in with her husband Michael. This variety show has featured many guests including The Nylons, Michael Burgess, the Rankin Sisters, Vicki Gabereau, Jackson Davies, Norman Foote, Valdy, Dee Daniels and Shari Ulrich…all backed by some of Vancouver’s finest musicians and several children’s choirs. In its nine-year production history the show has raised over $30,000 for charity.

Currently, Monique maintains a busy schedule of recording session work, performing and consulting as well as teaching vocals, piano and keyboards in West Vancouver.
